Overview
A federal government department engaged SoftLabs to provide testing services across multiple concurrent technology migration projects. Their existing testing methodology lacked the rigour and structure required to manage risk across a program of this scale and complexity. The objective was to introduce a mature, repeatable QA framework capable of supporting high-stakes enterprise migrations, and to do so rapidly, through experienced testing contractors who could embed within existing project teams and uplift internal capability.
The program encompassed the migration of the Windows 10 Standard Operating Environment (SOE), intranet applications, Microsoft Office 2019, Office 365 Cloud Services (including Microsoft Teams), and all enterprise applications within a Citrix Workspace environment. Each workstream carried significant organisational risk, requiring structured test planning, cross-environment validation, and clear defect governance to ensure successful rollout with minimal disruption.
Key Achievements
- Designed and delivered comprehensive test strategies, test plans, test objective matrices, test execution plans, defect logs, and test summary reports using QTest — establishing a documentation framework consistent with contemporary government QA standards.
- Delivered end-to-end testing across the Windows 10 SOE migration, covering all Standard Operating Environment applications and ensuring compatibility across the organisation’s application portfolio.
- Conducted structured migration testing for all intranet applications within the Win10 environment, identifying compatibility and configuration issues prior to organisation-wide rollout.
- Validated the migration from Microsoft Office 2016 to Office 2019, including regression testing of macros, templates, and integration-dependent workflows critical to business operations.
- Tested the transition to Office 365 Cloud Services and Microsoft Teams, covering collaboration, data sovereignty, and end-user functionality requirements in a hybrid cloud environment.
- Performed application compatibility and functionality testing across the Win10 Citrix Workspace environment, ensuring all business-critical applications performed reliably within the virtualised desktop infrastructure.
- Introduced structured defect identification and resolution governance, enabling issues to be surfaced, triaged, and resolved before rollout — protecting end-user experience and reducing post-deployment support burden.
Outcome
All five migration workstreams, Windows 10 SOE, intranet application migration, Office 2019 upgrade, Office 365 and Teams deployment, and Citrix Workspace validation, were successfully delivered. The rigorous testing processes implemented by SoftLabs enabled the identification and resolution of issues prior to rollout in each case, supporting smooth transitions with reduced organisational risk and post-deployment incident rates.
